CONTINUING EDUCATION
Pediatric Sleep Health: Assessment, Treatment, & Collaboration
J. Chris McGinnis, PhD, BCBA-D, IBA
THIS COURSE
This 2-CEU continuing education course is a must for all practicing behavior analysts working with children. It covers core competencies in pediatric sleep health for helping professionals (Boerner, Coulombe, & Corkum, 2015) which include the basics of sleep, outcomes of inadequate sleep, causes of sleep problems, assessment, behavioral intervention, support for caregivers, and interdisciplinary collaboration. These core competences help practitioners satisfy requirements of the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts. A 10-question test follows, on which you must make 80% correct to earn credit.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, the participant will be able to a) describe how sleep problems in children place them and their families at risk for problems with behavior, emotion, medical health, performance, and social problems as well as misdiagnosis, b) describe sleep requirements for various ages and how to accurately calculate required bedtime, c) perform a sleep-focused interview which assesses for signs of insufficient sleep and examines factors maintaining sleep problems, d) describe several scenarios that would prompt interdisciplinary consultation and collaboration, and c) delineate a number of antecedent manipulations that would predictably improve sleep and select one or two intervention procedures that would most likely improve bedtime and independent sleep onset.
